Sparking Joy with Fashion
S
pring is the time to start fresh and
spark joy in your life. With Marie
Kondo’s organization techniques
taking the country by storm
everyone has jumped on the minimalistic
bandwagon. When you’re doing your
spring cleaning and sorting through your
wardrobe it’s important to be intentional
with the new items you’re bringing in.
Instead of spending all of your hard
earned cash on disposable fashion you’ll
be sick of next week, invest in quality
pieces that speak to you and can be
incorporated into your current wardrobe.
Choose classic clothing that can be
carried over from season to season and
you will form an Instagram worthy capsule
wardrobe. There are many methods to
minimizing your wardrobe such as holding
each item in your hands and deciding if it
sparks joy for you. If it does, you keep it,
and if it doesn’t, you thank the item and
let it go. If this method doesn’t work for
you, some people say that if you haven’t
worn an item in the last six months, it’s
time to get rid of it. If it doesn’t fi t, don’t
hang onto it with hopes that one day
it will again. Let it go and you will feel
lighter.
In a fast paced world where everyone is
constantly on the go, being organized will
help simplify your life. Having less things
will actually give you more time. When
you can visually see all of the items that
you own it makes it easy to mix and match
your clothing and make the most of your
existing wardrobe. Most people do not
have the luxury of having a huge custom
made walk in closet, but you can make the
most of what you have on any budget and
any size storage. Hanging your clothes
on felted hangers keeps your items from
sliding off and is a space saver as well.
Separating your clothing by category and
color will make it easier to fi nd items, and
is also extremely aesthetically pleasing.
Invest in a quality dresser and store as
many of your clothes as you can fi le
folded. The basic KonMari vertical fold
can be applied to everything from T-shirts
to denim. First, make a long rectangle,
and then fold from the bottom up into a
little package.
There are never-ending options for
fancy drawer dividers, baskets and
organizational items for your clothing and
accessories. But you can take a page from
Marie Kondo and utilize a good old shoe
box for many purposes. You can separate
your fi le folded items in your drawers, you
can store accessories or line-up bathing
suits, scarves and more. If you are tight
on space, try storing your purses inside
one another. It takes up less room, and
also holds the form of your bags better.
Having fewer items that you truly covet
makes you take better care of the pieces
that you have. A great way to store your
boots and recycle at the same time is to
roll up magazines and stuff your boots
to have them standing tall and proud on
your shelf. If you have extra space, you
can repurpose a bookshelf to store and
showcase your shoes and handbags.
Make tidying up a fun journey and it can
become a process that will change your
life.
