T
he American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Pensacola hosted its official
kick-off for the 2019 fundraising season on February 7, at Apple Annie’s
in Seville Quarter. The community was invited to attend and learn more
about the Relay for Life movement and how to help the American Cancer
Society attack cancer from every angle. The kick-off event provided the community the
opportunity to register for the Relay for Life in May, as well as valuable information on
the event. Vernon Stewart hosted the gathering, and announced the theme for this year’s
Relay, which is “Keeping the 80’s Alive.”
Students from Pine Forest High School in the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honors Society
participated in the event, and chose Relay as their service project for this year. The Relay
for Life allows students an opportunity to gain service experience, add community service
hours, and help reach others in need. The goal for the group was to inform the entire
student body about the statistical survival rates for all the various cancers under research.
Relay for Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Relay is
staffed and coordinated by volunteers in thousands of communities and 27 countries
worldwide. Volunteers give their time and effort because they believe it is time to take
action against cancer. These events bring communities together to remember loved ones
lost, honor survivors of all cancers, and raise money to help the American Cancer Society
make a global impact on cancer.
