T

he cooler months of the year are Pensacola’s off-season for tourism, and the Krewe
of Nereid ladies have found a way to bring a little life back into the beach during
the break.  On Friday, January 19, the Krewe of Nereid Moonpie Party was held at
Castaways on the Boardwalk at Pensacola Beach.

Moonpies are an iconic and integral part of the Mardi Gras celebration, and the all-female

krewe decided to make them the main attraction of their annual party. The tradition of this
party has been running strong for 27 years and is a fantastic way for the krewe to help promote
women’s issues, plan fundraisers, and support the tourism and hospitality industries in the
community. Attendees were also encouraged to bring accessories that blink and fl ash.

The Krewe of Nereid donates funds to local charities including the Homeless Women’s Vets

and the Red Cross and grants a dance scholarship to Dancingly Yours Studio in Gulf Breeze.

The ladies of the krewe created several baskets fi lled with unique items, which were then

raffl ed off.  A silent auction was also held for a handmade wreath and hand-painted Mardi Gras
masks. The Krewe of Nereid will also be riding in the Pensacola Beach Mardi Gras Parade on
Sunday, February 11, starting at Via de Luna and Avenida to Gulfside Pavilion.
