O
n Wednesday, February 15, the Pensacola International Airport
temporarily rebranded its name to Pensacola Intergalactic Airport in
support of Pensacon. The airport welcomes guests fl ying in from all across
the globe to attend this convention. The Cosplay Character Day featured
local cosplayers dressed as characters such as Captain America, Sue Storm, Sailor
Jupiter, Spiderman, Star Wars characters, Batgirl, the Fourth Doctor and many others
throughout the day. The cosplayers rotated in different shifts in order to give arriving
convention goers photo ops in front of a special backdrop.
Pensacon (Pensacola’s largest and most community involved comic con) is an annual
event that occurs the third week of February and features all kinds of entertainment.
The event encompasses the entirety of downtown Pensacola for three days and is a
multi-business endeavor. Many local businesses also embrace the convention just as the
airport does. The Pensacola Fish House, Atlas, Beef O’ Brady’s and numerous other
restaurants decorate in themes for the weekend, allowing the fun to continue even after
the convention is over for the day.
This year, Pensacon has expanded to encompass fi ve venues. The Pensacola Bay
Center is where you can meet over 100 celebrities and artists, and features a massive
vendor fl oor for all your geeky wares. The Rex Theatre, Sanger Theatre, Pensacola Little
Theatre and the Pensacola Grand (Crowne Plaza) Hotel all feature panels where you can
attend Q & A sessions with the stars.
