O
n April 24, the women of the Junior League gathered together at the beautiful
home of Belle Bear to host their annual Sustainer Luncheon. Each year, a
different sustainer hosts the luncheon, and they present the Joan Gonzalez
Award to a member of the league who has shown exemplary community
service and dedication to the league. This recipient is also an active member in the
volunteer community, and works to inspire active Junior League members to continue
their support. Nancy Sowell received the award this year, and has been a sustainer of the
Pensacola League since 1984 as Assistant Treasurer. Recently, she celebrated 60 years as
an alumna of Kappa Delta, and she and her husband were named WEAR’s Angels In Our
Midst for their dedicated reading service for Cordova Elementary Students.
The Junior League Committee also recognizes the outgoing and incoming presidents,
as well as past recipients of the Joan Gonzales Award. The league has purchased a new
building downtown to help further the literal and physical progress of the direction
of the foundation, and an announcement was made about their new “Spark Board”
program, which will allow teens an opportunity to learn and get along with others in the
community.
