T

hirty-three years ago, a few locals
tried to toss a dead mullet from
Florida to Alabama. Now, over

three decades later, up to 10,000 people a day
throw mullets from Florida towards Alabama
in a long weekend of festivities. This year
the 33rd Annual Interstate Mullet Toss and
Gulf Coast Beach Party kicked off on Friday,
April 28, and was in full swing through
Sunday. The Flora-Bama Lounge on Perdido
Key was jam packed with fi sh throwers and
cheering friends. As they stepped up to the
ring to throw you could hear strategies being
discussed. Some threw overhanded, some
under handed, some even threw over their
backs. After each throw the participant would
go retrieve their mullet and put it back in the
cooler for the next person in line. Receiving
a T-shirt, food certifi cates and the chance
at a trophy, while knowing your entry fee
would help someone, was enough for the
people standing in line. Mullet throwers
were tracked from as far away as Australia,
and each day at noon celebrities such as Blue
Angels, Blue Wahoo’s, news and TV people
tried their luck. Proceeds from the event go to
local youth charities.
