Manor on the Sound

T

hough the bleating of goats might be a 

sound one would expect to hear while 

gamboling about the bucolic meadowlands 

of some quaint little farm village, it seems 

oddly out of place—strangely alien, almost—in any 

setting other than one of painterly pastoral beauty. But 

perhaps the home of Eva and David Maloney could 

be considered a lesson in expecting the unexpected, 

its stateliness impressively impassive in its way, 

giving not even the most mere of hints at the scope 

of grandeur that lies behind its stuccoed façade. It is 

breathtakingly stunning, to be sure, set amidst lush 

landscaping that is luxurious, meticulously manicured 

by human hands rather than being kept in check by 

four-legged foragers passing by. But listen closely and 

you might indeed hear something quite unexpected: 

the raucous greetings of a pair of goats named Coco 

and Chanel as they while away the day, enjoying a life 

of luxury complete with their very own view of the 

glittering waters of Navarre Sound at the Maloney 

estate—as a property so grand as this could hardly be 

considered anything less.   

Originally built in the 1970’s, the clean lines of 

Mediterranean architecture might give the impression 

of austerity, though each room of the 6,000 square foot
