Escambia Co. Sheriff’s Offi ce gives
$10,000 to PSC’s McGuire scholarship
fund

Pensacola State’s Culinary Arts program received

a $10,000 boost Wednesday from the Escambia
County Sheriff’s Offi ce, Sheriff David Morgan.

Morgan made the donation to the Molly McGuire

Culinary Arts Endowed Scholarship fund.  Molly
“McGuire” Martin, the matriarch of McGuire’s Irish
Pub in Pensacola, died in August 2014.

Morgan said the donation is part of the sheriff’s

offi ce long-term community reinvestment efforts.

In fall 2015, the fi rst scholarships were distributed

to several culinary arts students.

Pensacola State President Ed Meadows said he and

the entire college family were touched by Morgan’s
generosity.

“It makes us feel good here at Pensacola State to

know that Sheriff Morgan recognizes the way this
college changes lives,” Meadows said. “Many of
our students have full-time jobs, are parents and
caregivers. But they are willing to make sacrifi ces
to earn a degree or certifi cation because they realize
education is the pathway to a better life.”

McGuire Martin said his late wife would be “so, so

pleased” with the gift. “This donation will help some
young people further their education. It is money
well-spent by the sheriff’s offi ce.”

Jim Reeves, a longtime Martin friend and real

estate attorney, spearheaded the initial fundraising
efforts for the endowment following Molly
“McGuire” Martin’s death in 2014.

Morgan said the donation was part of the sheriff’s

offi ce diversionary plan which serves as an incentive
for young people to continue their education. “This
was my fi rst time partnering with Mr. Reeves and
Mr. Martin but the sheriff’s department plans to
make more donations to Pensacola State’s culinary
arts program in the future.”

Mayor Hayward, Pensacola Heritage
Foundation unveil gift from Sister City in
Spain

On November 14 Mayor Hayward and the

Pensacola Heritage Foundation unveiled a gifted
portrait of Bernardo de Gálvez.

The Gálvez Monument Project received a

meaningful gift from the society known as the
Granaderos y Damas de Gálvez (soldiers and
women of Gálvez) and the Foundation Remedios
Medina, by its President Francisco Javier Fructuoso
Medina. In cooperation with Pensacola’s Sister City,
Macharaviaya, this dedicated group of individuals
offered to help raise funds for Pensacola’s statue
by commissioning a portrait of General Gálvez.
The portrait was painted in Málaga by Francisco
Rodríguez, a young artist from the same school as
Monserrate, the author of the original portrait.

Katie Hallybone, Vice Mayor of Macharaviaya,

writing to Mayor Ashton Hayward of Pensacola
states that the “original iconic painting of the General
has an addition, making it unique to Pensacola.”
Within the pattern of the portrait, the artist included
the coat of arms of the General on the upper right.
Within the coat of arms is written in Spanish, “Yo
Solo.” The English translation is “I alone” and
represents the statement Gálvez made before the
battle when his Spanish Navy ships were reluctant
to enter the narrow strait of Pensacola Bay. Galvez
offered to sail in fi rst, alone, and as a consequence the
rest of the ships followed and the resulting battle was
one of the longest sieges in the American Revolution.

Using this exquisite portrait from friends in Spain,

PHF will raise funds for the statue dedicated to
Bernardo de Gálvez. Pensacola Heritage Foundation
will then give the completed monument to the City
of Pensacola who will add it to its historic inventory
of buildings, statues, and gardens. Thus, the alliance,
affectionate friendships and traditions between Spain
and America endure.
