Clifford The Big Red Dog to Help
WSRE “Hit a Home Run for Early
Learning” at Blue Wahoos Stadium

Families are invited to help “Hit a Home

Run for Early Learning” at the WSRE
Imagination Station at Blue Wahoos Stadium
on Sunday, Aug. 5, starting at 4 p.m.
There will be fun children’s activities and
appearances by Clifford the Big Red Dog,
and each child will receive a free book, while
supplies last.

The Imagination Station is located outside

the stadium near the box offi ce. Clifford
will also be inside the stadium in time for a
pre-game “Fun Run for Reading” around the
bases and to throw a ceremonial fi rst pitch
when the Pensacola Blue Wahoos play the
Montgomery Biscuits.

“That will be ‘Bark in the Park’ night when

Wahoos fans can bring dogs to the game, so
we’re bringing every kid’s favorite, larger-
than-life, four-legged friend, Clifford,” said
Jill Hubbs, director of WSRE Educational
Content & Services, who will share early
childhood education resources with parents
during the event.

The WSRE Imagination Station is a free

early learning activity center for parents
to engage with their children in hands-on
activities using PBS KIDS educational
resources, including computer games, books
and toys. Regular hours are 9 a.m. to noon
Monday through Saturday and during
Pensacola Blue Wahoos home games, opening
an hour before the fi rst pitch.

“Clifford the Big Red Dog” is an animated

television series produced by Scholastic
Entertainment, who recently announced a fall
2019 relaunch of the multiple Emmy-winning
preschool series based on the best-selling
books by Norman Bridwell.

Scholarship Endowment
Established in Memory of UWF
Alumna and Music Enthusiast

The University of West Florida has

announced a $166,000 gift to establish
the Doris Jean Kahn Music Scholarship
Endowment. The endowment was created
in memory of Kahn, a UWF alumna, by
her family through the Robert H. Kahn, Jr.
Family Foundation.

Kahn was a long-time member of the

Pensacola Music Study Club, formed in
1919. A special interest of hers was the club’s
scholarship competition for teens, hosted
by the UWF Department of Music, where
scholarships are presented in Kahn’s honor
annually. Scholarships of $1,000 each are
awarded to students between the ages of 14
and 19 in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties
in the categories of strings, piano juniors,
piano seniors, woodwind/brass and voice.
Runners-up in each category receive an
award of $200. The Doris Jean Kahn Music
Scholarship Endowment will continue the
award in perpetuity.

Kahn came to Pensacola in 1946 after

marrying Robert H. “Bobby” Kahn, who was
born and raised in Pensacola. She was an avid
tennis player, reader and sailor in addition to
her passion for music. She played the piano
and supported the Pensacola Symphony
and the Pensacola Opera, as well as the
Metropolitan Opera, which she attended
yearly.

Pensacola Bay Area Non-profi ts

Four Pensacola Bay Area non-profi ts have

been awarded $100,000 in grant awards
from Sunday’s Child, a Pensacola Bay Area
nonprofi t that promotes LGBT acceptance
and inclusion in Northwest Florida.

The awards were announced after a live vote

at the Pensacola philanthropic organization’s
fourth annual membership meeting held
Sunday at the Pensacola Improv Center in
Pensacola’s Brownsville neighborhood.

The organizations that are recipients

of $25,000 each are OASIS Florida, the
Pensacola Little Theatre, Capstone Adaptive
Learning and Therapy Centers, and Feeding
the Gulf Coast.

“We are thrilled to award $100,000 this

year to such deeply deserving organizations,”
said Drew Buchanan, president of Sunday’s
Child. “Sunday’s Child has grown to record
membership, with 2018 being our most
successful year yet. With this collective award
of $100,000, we’ve proved just how much the
citizens of the Pensacola Bay Area care about
diversity in their communities.”

Launched in 2014, Sunday’s Child is made

up of members that donate funds annually.
100 percent of funds donated go towards
grant awards, which are determined by
the votes of members in June. The group
places an emphasis on grants to nonprofi t
organizations and initiatives that place value
on diversity, inclusion, and equality in the
Pensacola Bay Area of Escambia and Santa
Rosa counties.
