T

he Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida Gumbo Ya Ya event was held on
Saturday, March 3, at Seville Quarter. Phineas Phogg’s was fi lled with amateur
and professional teams competing for bragging rights for the best gumbo in
Pensacola. Guests were given three beans upon entry to pick their favorite krewe’s

gumbo.  Each individual gumbo was judged on taste, smell, color, and consistency.  Trophies
were awarded to the top three winners.  In addition, a showmanship trophy was awarded to the
station with the best decoration and entertainment.  The coveted People’s Choice trophy was
determined by the highest number of beans in each station’s collection bucket.

Entry to the competition was $20 per three-person team and was maxed to the limit of 15

teams.  Seville Quarter supplied tables, burners, and a clean-up area.  Each team was required to
prepare their gumbo from scratch at Seville Quarter. Cooking began at 11:00 a.m. and judging
started at 4:00 p.m.  The public tasting was held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. and was priced $10 at the
door.  All proceeds from door sales went to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida is running a campaign through March,

which incorporates recruiting 30 “Bigs” in 30 days. If interested in becoming a mentor, visit
