arrying a warm, farmhouse feel to Coastal
sophistication may not seem like the most natural
thing to do; but for Kris and David Pritchard, that
was precisely what they were hoping to achieve
in the nearly 3000 square foot home they built in Gulf Breeze
in October 2017. The aesthetic is clear from one’s very first
approach to this spacious three-level home, so inviting with a
sea foam green plank fiberboard exterior trimmed out in white
and topped off with a complementary aluminum metal roof. But
just beyond the front door, the farmhouse vibe comes into play,
peeking out in various elements that offer a subtle nod to the style
rather than shouting it out. It is a blend artfully done, something
that speaks to the Pritchard’s coastal North Carolinian roots as
well as their natural affinity for refinement balanced out with the
natural warmth and coziness so inherent to more country living.
Each of the home’s 12 rooms are deeply reflective of their distinct
style, from the thick wooden moldings and the reclaimed wood on
the living room feature wall to the elegance of the granite used in
their luxurious chef’s kitchen.
Flowing throughout its three levels, the home has flooring of
engineered oak, offering a cohesive current of warmth that seems
to ground each of the spaces even while it unites them. And as the
heart of the home, the kitchen was naturally given a great deal of
thought and design, announcing itself with distinction through
the muted tones of its white custom wood cabinetry topped with
sleek gray and white granite. Offering more prep space to Kris’s
frequent forays into chef-dom, cooking her signature pan-seared
filet mignon or Southern-style shrimp and grits, is a large center
island of gray cabinets inset with a stainless steel microwave
drawer and wine fridge perfect for storing the couple’s favorite
bottles of cabernet. But while bold, dry reds might help them
wind down, their custom coffee bar provides the perfect spot to
perk up and get ready for the day. Lining the perimeter walls is
a backsplash of sea glass green glass subway tile that inject the
space with just a hint of color and create an ideal balance to the
gleaming surfaces of stainless steel appliances and white porcelain
farmhouse sink. “We both love the kitchen, and one of David’s
favorite things to do is sit at the island sipping a glass of wine
while I’m cooking,” Kris says of her doting husband, who spends
his days working as a clinical specialist for a medical device
company.
There is no shortage of things to love in this expansive and airy
home, as ten-foot ceilings provide a feeling of openness while a
wealth of windows offer a flood of natural light. “I love having so
many windows and the general flow of the house,” says Kris, who
works as an ER nurse practitioner at West Florida Hospital. “It’s
so open, yet the rooms are distinct enough to still seem separate
even though they’re really one big space.”
Further bits of expressive flair literally take the floor in the
master bathroom, laundry room, and powder room, each of which
offer conversation points in their wood-look plank tile. Rather
than being the more expected shades of natural wood, the faux
planks have a distressed finish in a patchwork array of neutral
browns, greens, grays, and whites that give the impression of
antique painted wood boards. “Many people comment on the
flooring,” says Kris. “It’s so rustic and very cool, and it really
does look like reclaimed barn siding. My husband was a bit afraid
of it when I picked it out, but he loves it now that it’s down,” she
laughs.
