n the morning hours of Saturday, July 21, Seville Quarter hosted its 8th annual Running of
the Bulls event. The fi esta is celebrated in honor of Saint Fermin, patron of Navarra, and
both religion and partying elements live out the fi esta in good harmony. In this celebratory
run, the “bulls” are replaced by the “Pensacola Roller Gurlz,” who wear horns on their

helmets, and are armed with wiffl eball bats. Over four hundred contestants participated this
year, with even more participants saying they would bring friends next year. The traditional
attire for the San Fermin (runners) consisted of a white top, white pants or shorts, a red
neckerchief and red sash or belt.

On the fi rst rocket launch, the runners were sent. The second rocket signaled the release of the

bulls. The race is hosted by Seville Quarter, but organized and run by Pensabulls, a nonprofi t
organization formed to produce the race and oversee the event’s fundraising efforts. Proceeds
from race fees benefi t USO of Northwest Florida. Prizes were awarded for categories including:
Best Group, Most Outlandish, Best Bull Horns, Best Bull Team, Spirit of Andres Depez Award,
Viva Pamplona Spirit Award, and the Red Bull “Wish You Had Wings” Award for Male and
Female Best Senor and Senorita.
