G
litter isn’t something that most men would admit to
having in their toolbox, but for Joe Maloney, bits of glitter
are as much a part of his day as sawdust is to a carpenter’s.
Not that he runs around flinging fistfuls of the sparkly
stuff though the air like confetti at a party—rather, he uses
it as an essential part of his designs, strategically applying it
to intricately detailed pieces that come together to transform
even the blankest of spaces and the most cavernously empty
industrial halls into far off locales and fairy-tale wonderlands
that far exceed the conjurings of even the wildest imagination.
With his background in professional photography, Joe has
quite the eye for design, his understanding of the play between
light and color serving him well in the work that he does in set
construction—work that, while it may be a far cry from the
world of business development for which he earned his college
degree, is something that he takes great pride and joy in doing,
side by side with his wife Molly as part of the dynamic duo
behind the fabulous company they’ve created at Fabadashery.
Covered in her own cloud of glitter, Molly serves as the creative
brain of the outfit, having gotten her taste of the wide and
wild world of set designing after studying architecture at LSU
and learning to put those skills to work—not in planning the
structures of buildings, but in the creation of illusionary magic
that defies expectation.
Building on her impressive talents for faux finishing and
decorative painting, Molly started her very own company
in Shreveport, Louisiana, working with commercial and
residential clients on projects for everything from interior
painting to full on set design for major events. And when
the Maloneys decided to make their habit of vacationing in
Pensacola a permanent move, they put their combined talents
to work at various community events, taking on projects
that gave them the impetus to start a brand new business for
creating props and backdrops for full-scale themed parties
and events. Since 2013, Fabadashery has been going all out to
create monumentally unforgettable occasions for birthdays,
weddings, anniversaries, and community-wide festivals all over
the Gulf Coast that are unlike anything imaginable, working
with their clients to make their dreams a reality. “We start with
a blank canvas and a lot of conversation,” Molly explains. “Our
prospective clients come in and start talking about their ideas,
and I make suggestions and start sketching out what I think will
fit their needs. The whole creative process is really collaborative,
and I draw a great deal of inspiration for the designs from those
meetings with our clients,” she continues.
