T
he bride. The groom.
The white dress. The
rings. The dancing. A
wedding isn’t a wedding
without one key ingredient, the
wedding cake. Long gone are the
days of boring white sheet cakes
with thick frosting and a plastic
bride and groom on top. Today’s
cakes can be as elaborate as your
imagination allows. They can truly
embody the theme of the wedding
and exemplify the personality of
the couple. From an elaborate six-
tiered cake with intricate handmade
fondant decorations to a simple
round cake with fresh flowers,
the possibilities are endless.
Priscilla and Rich Veale began their
adventure in the baking industry
almost five years ago. Rich served
our country in the military for
21 years and has 13 years in law
enforcement and the couple are
parents to four boys. Over the years
the couple has owned several other
self-made businesses in Crestview
which gained them immense
experience leading up to owning
Lolo’s Cakes & Sweets; now their
only business. Priscilla has loved
baking since she was in her early
20’s and has a long family history in
the trade with her great grandfather
owning a bakery in Pensacola years
ago. In July of 2014 Priscilla’s friend
from High School, Beth, owned
Lolo’s Sweets & Cakes and decided
to sell it to Priscilla, another self-
taught cake artist. In the last few
years they have expanded to a larger
building, have an open storefront,
and even teach occasional classes.
Lolo’s was named after Beth’s
daughter and the name will never
change. When they purchased
Lolo’s almost five years ago Priscilla
had no training and had never
decorated a cake in her life. Three
short weeks later, after some quick
learning she was making wedding
cakes!
Although they’ve expanded
beyond cakes and cupcakes, custom
cakes remain their core business.
Although Priscilla enjoys trying
new things, she especially loves
doing wedding cakes. “There’s just
something about being chosen to
make a very special cake for one of
the biggest days of someone’s life.
That’s trust!” said Pricilla. She
continued, “ A close second would
be free reign cakes, meaning the
client chooses a theme and I choose
the design. They don’t know what
it will look like until pick up; this
is also a major trust for the buyer.
I feel free reign designs let my
creativity flow and I’m not confined
to specifics.” Creating a custom
dream wedding cake can take days.
The job isn’t finished once the
decorating is complete, then its
delivery time. You can’t always
transport a fully stacked cake, so
sometimes the tiers are transported
individually and then stacked at the
venue. Sometimes people gather
around to watch the production
take place. Once the cake is stacked,
the flowers, toppers and finishing
touches are placed. A few photos are
documented and someone looks over
the cake (usually the mother of the
bride), and then like a ninja in the
night, Priscilla quietly slips out.
Lolo’s receives baking requests
of all shapes, colors, designs and
flavors. Priscilla noted, “I really like
when kids bring in their own designs
and I can make it come to life for
them. The way their eyes light up
when they see their drawing turned
into cake just makes my day. Some
cry happy tears, some jump up and
down, and some give the biggest
hug!” In addition to these special
cakes, they make cheesecake, pies,
brownies, candy apples, cookies,
chocolate covered creations, and
several other treats. Priscilla
especially loves experimenting and
creating new desserts. The best
thing about the bakery is the ability
to grow with families. “It may sound
odd for your baker to say that, but a
lot of couples stay with me through
birthdays, engagements, weddings,
and baby showers,” described
Priscilla, “Next thing you know,
I’m doing their kid’s first birthday!
Some of my clients even become
friends.”
