P

t was graduation weekend at the University
of Arkansas and my whole family was
coming to Fayetteville for the occasion.

At this point, Scott and I had been dating for about
three years and I knew he could propose at any
time, as we had already had “the conversation.”
Knowing Scott, he would do anything in his power
to keep me from finding out when the proposal was
going to happen. This would obviously be the most
appropriate weekend for him to do it since my whole
family was coming into town... so I just knew he
wouldn’t make it that obvious, right? Our plan was to
meet my parents for a nice celebratory graduation
dinner on Thursday night directly after picking my
brother up from the airport. I coincidentally wore
a white sundress and Scott wore a navy blue blazer.
Conveniently already dressed up, we headed to the
airport to get my brother. After about 20 minutes of
driving, we took a turn down an old country road
because he wanted to show me “a cool spot.” This
is very typical of Scott, so I didn’t think too much of
it. In the distance I saw an earthy yet modern barn
like building. It was the private art studio of George
Dombek. Which, by the way, Scott had to personally
call him to request a visit. When at first Mr. Dombek
said no, he then called Scott back two minutes later
to grant his request. After arrival, Scott walked me
inside and explained each piece of art. Then suddenly
he stopped in front of a painting that had a red
cardinal on it. The irony in this is that along the way
during our relationship I prayed to God for a sign to
marry Scott. I was on a long drive and prayed “God, if
you really want me to marry Scott, if he is really the
one, show me a cardinal.” In 20 minutes I counted 13.
Needless to say, when Scott got down on one knee
right then and there, I said YES! To top off the night,
we met my parents, my brother—who had been in
town all day, and Scott’s parents at a restaurant called
The Preacher’s Son. This restaurant is an old church
whose stained glass had been designed by the artist,
George Dombek.
