riends and guests met at Cuvée Kitchen + Wine
Bar for an Aletha’s Hope Mission Farewell Send
Off Party for Zhalman Harris and Janet Reeves,
who departed on their second mission trip to
Liberia, West Africa, on Saturday, November 10. The
evening included a silent auction and guests rallied to wish
Zhalman and Janet a proper farewell with love and well
wishes.
Aletha’s Hope was created by Zhalman and his friend Janet
Reeves, in honor of Zhalman’s mother, Aletha. These mission
trips are near and dear to Zhalman’s heart, as he was born in
Liberia and lost his mother and their home due to the 14-year
civil war that ravaged the country. The purpose of Aletha’s Hope
is to provide orphanages in Liberia with the tools they need to
become self-suffi cient. “We believe improving the health and
nutritional status of these children is vital, therefore we provide
vitamins, iron, and medications, as well as a means for them to
have a year- round food supply by teaching them to grow their
own food,” said Harris. The organization upgrades the children’s
living conditions by repairing the buildings and providing
mattresses so that the children have less chance of catching and
transmitting illnesses. “We train them to not litter, pick up
trash and educate them on other measures to improve sanitation
which, in turn, creates a healthier environment,” added Reeves.
On the trip,
Aletha’s Hope provided 60 new mattresses and
mosquito nets for the children, renovated their living quarters,
and installed solar panels. Just these small things will help make
the lives of these beautiful kids better.
