T
he Grand Opening Gallery Night at the Hyatt Place Sandestin at Grand Boulevard took place on
February 21. People gathered in from the foggy weather for an evening filled with appetizers and drinks,
a silent auction, tours of the rooms and suites, live music, and even a live painting. All benefiting Port St.
Joe and Wewahitchka High School’s art programs, two schools that were affected by Hurricane Michael,
Hyatt Place wanted to do something special for their grand opening to help the recovery efforts in a way to give back
to the students. All proceeds from the silent auction go directly to those programs.
Hyatt Place at Sandestin is committed to embracing and showcasing local artists’ work. Around this beautiful
hotel, you’ll see artwork from Raul Pardo, Linda Kernick, Alejandra Vega, Kathleen Schomacher, Tania Koehler,
Amy Larurae, Peter Petrov, and Justin Gaffrey. Justin Gaffrey showcased a live painting exhibition throughout the
evening that was raffled off as part of the proceeds.
Melissa Oropesa, Director of Experience and Marketing said she was able to visit these schools and speak with the
principals and staff directly, working closely with each of them. She was moved by the love they had for their jobs
and so glad they were able to attend the event and see the support that the community was given.
